Sen. Cory Gardner has resolved his procedural block of Department of Justice nominations after receiving President Donald Trump’s assurances that Colorado’s legal marijuana industry will not be targeted for federal prosecution.
The White House assurances prompted the Colorado Republican to drop his hold on about 20 appointments for positions in the Justice Department. It’s a good result, bringing to an end an unfortunate flap triggered in January when Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced he was erasing former President Barack Obama’s policy of hands off marijuana businesses that conform to state laws where marijuana has been legalized.
Gardner reacted at the time, saying Sessions contradicted his own previous assurances that he would not crack down on the industry in those states.
