THEY GRABBED A CLIPBOARD ... It looks like a lot of Coloradans took the advice of a certain soon-to-be-former president. In his farewell address, delivered just over a week before leaving office, President Barack Obama said an oft-quoted line — "If you're disappointed by your elected officials, grab a clipboard, get some signatures, and run for office yourself" — that might have launched a thousand candidacies, including quite a few here in Colorado.

Eagle County Commissioner Jill Ryan, a Democrat serving her second term, announced Friday she's running for the House District 26 seat held by state Rep. Diane Mitsch Busch, who is running for Congress. Ryan joins Eagle County Deputy District Attorney Dylan Roberts, also a Democrat, in the race. The Democrats might have a candidate for the seat by the end of the year, however, because both Ryan and Roberts plan to apply for the vacancy Mitsch Bush has said she'll create when she resigns in November to run full-time against U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton in the 3rd Congressional District.

As a member of Congress, I have the unique opportunity to visit the memorials dedicated to fallen service members that are just a short distance from the Capitol building. Across the Potomac River, Arlington National Cemetery serves as the final resting place for hundreds of thousands of men and women who served in the armed services. Each day I work in Washington, I am reminded that the privilege we have of living in a free society has been paid by so many who have selflessly sacrificed their lives in service to their country. Memorial Day offers an important opportunity for us to reflect and pay our respects to those who have given all.
