Students swarm Colorado Capitol as part of National Walkout Day movement

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper took to Twitter Wednesday to laud students who swarmed the Colorado Capitol in support of National Walkout Day.

“Powerful walkout today,” he tweeted. “Thanks to our young leaders here and around the country. Colorado has taken steps on guns and we need to do more.”

Students gathering outside the golden dome numbered in the hundreds, reported Democratic state Sen. Steve Fenberg on Twitter.

“MASSIVE turnout for here at the Colorado Capitol,” the Colorado Senate Democrats tweeted. “So much turnout we got a State Patrol text alert about ‘an excessive amount of students on the West side of the Capitol.'”

Democratic State Rep. Paul Rosenthal tweeted a picture of himself standing in front of a sea of students outside the Capitol. “Your voices to demand action on #gunsafety are needed!” he typed.

Colorado House Democrats wore red ribbons Wednesday in honor of the victims of last month’s school shooting in Parkland, Fla., the group tweeted.

Republican state legislators appeared to avoid the topic of the walkout on Twitter Wednesday, with several tweeting in celebration of National Pi Day, in memoriam of legendary physicist Stephen Hawking, and regarding proposed transportation legislation.

Now, he […]

Senate Bill 1 would ask voters in November to set aside more than $300 million a […]
