‘Enough cranks in Congress’: Lauren Boebert backs Dave Williams in 5th CD’s GOP primary
U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert waded into the Republican primary for the Colorado congressional seat held by retiring U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn on Monday with a social media post supporting candidate Dave Williams.
“We’ve got enough cranks in Congress already,” Boebert posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “The PEOPLE want Dave Williams!”
Williams, the chairman of the Colorado GOP and a former state lawmaker from Colorado Springs, is running against Americans for Prosperity executive and former talk radio host Jeff Crank in the 5th Congressional District, which covers most of El Paso County.
Primary ballots go in the mail to voters during the first week of June, and they’re due back to county clerks by June 25.
Boebert’s tweet quoted a post on X by Florida Republican Matt Gaetz, who slammed a fundraising invitation for Crank’s campaign that cited Gaetz’ support for Williams as a reason to donate to Crank.
The primary for the heavily Republican seat is shaping up to be a contest between two rival factions of the Republican Party — those most solidly associated with former President Donald Trump and his MAGA movement, and those more aligned with the GOP’s traditional wing.
Williams has been endorsed by Trump and the House Freedom Caucus, which counts Boebert and Gaetz as members, while Crank has support from House Speaker Mike Johnson and other House Republicans, including Lamborn, as well as numerous former elected officials from Colorado.
Noting that several prominent Republicans were planning to attend a high-dollar Crank fundraiser next week in Washington, Gaetz tweeted, “And they’re begging special interest PACs and donors to support the Crank campaign — BECAUSE I SUPPORT DAVE WILLIAMS!”
“This is the desperate, sad America Last energy that has infected the GOP for too long. Stand with Trump. Have my back,” Gaetz added. “Join me in sending Dave Williams a donation today. Send the Swamp a message — not another vote.”
Boebert is running in a primary of her own in the 4th Congressional District, which was represented by U.S. Rep. Ken Buck until late March, when the five-term Republican resigned from Congress. After winning two terms in the Western Slope-based 3rd Congressional District, Boebert announced late last year that she was moving across the state into Buck’s district, covering Douglas County and the Eastern Plains. She’s one of six candidates on the primary ballot for the reliably Republican seat.
Williams has has been targeted with mounting criticism this year for using the state party apparatus to boost his congressional campaign, including calls for his resignation and a formal complaint filed last month with the Federal Election Commission alleging improper spending by the Colorado GOP.
Under controversial new rules adopted with Williams’ support, the Republican Party is endorsing candidates in contested primaries for the first time this year, including support for Boebert and Williams in their respective congressional primaries.
Williams welcomed Boebert’s support in a statement to Colorado Politics.
“No one has fought harder against Washington corruption than Lauren Boebert and Donald Trump, and that’s why I’m proud and humbled to have their support in this critical race,” said Williams in a text message.
Crank’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
