Two of Colorado’s well known political families — both Republican — will soon become officially linked with the impending marriage of their offspring. Monica Owens, public affairs consultant at her own company and daughter of former Gov. Bill and First Lady Frances Owens, and John Beauprez, son of GOP gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez and wife Claudia, became engaged on the Fourth of July after a nearly one and a half year courtship.

It began when the two youngsters (she’s 31, he’s almost 30) were intentionally seated next to each other during a black tie gala premiere to celebrate the debut of the University of Colorado Hospital’s new 12-story inpatient tower in early 2013. Claudia, a former corporate director and real estate agent and member of the University of Colorado Foundation board, co-chaired the event with fellow board member Sharon Magness Blake.

Claudia invited good friend Frances Owens to the black-tie affair, and she brought daughter Monica to the CU fundraiser. Claudia had conveniently (and intuitively) seated Monica next to her youngest son, John.

“I didn’t even know that the Beauprez’ had a third son,” Monica recalled, but the two hit it off right from the start. They’ve been dating since February of 2013. If you’ve been to Republican dinners and events over the last year, you’ve likely seen the two together.

As for their engagement over the holiday weekend, apparently it was somewhat of a family affair. John, a marketing specialist better known for his skills as a professional poker player (he’s currently in Las Vegas participating in the 45th Annual World Series of Poker where he was registered to play in Monday’s No-Limit Hold’em Main Event with the winner to receive $10 million), had earlier secured the permission of Bill and Frances to ask for their daughter’s hand in marriage. The former governor and first lady were thrilled at the prospect. And Bob and Claudia were also in on the big secret, helping to arrange surprise accommodations for the couple at the classy St. Julien Hotel in Boulder that evening.

John proposed before the fireworks display at Folsom Field in Boulder on Friday night. (And Monica, of curse, accepted!)

Monica was caught off guard. She was hoping a proposal was in her future, but she figured it would come after the November election, or maybe around Christmas. She is currently the finance chair for Beauprez’ gubernatorial campaign against Gov. John Hickenlooper, and is very busy, as one would expect. (And her Dad, likewise, is also serving on Beauprez’ finance team.) The insightful groom-to-be knew that Monica wouldn’t think a proposal would be forthcoming during the height of the election season, which is exactly why he decided to pop the question over the weekend.

“I feel very lucky,” Monica told The Colorado Statesman on Monday. “First that I love him. He’s also Catholic and our families love each other.”

And catch this oh-so-sweet comment from the upcoming bride. “Mom and Claudia are like two peas in a pod. My Mom is the nicest woman in the word and Claudia is so sweet and loves her grandkids.”

The two lovebirds have not set a date for the wedding, but it will definitely be after this year’s elections, probably early or mid 2015. If the political stars are aligned, Monica could end up being the daughter of the 40th governor of Colorado and the daughter-in-law of Colorado’s 43rd governor.

Congratulations to the couple!
