LETTER: Sen. Grantham needs to read the Constitution

Dear Editor,

I read with growing disgust The Statesman article in which Colorado Republicans lauded Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders’ crusade against Islam at the recent Western Conservative Summit held in Denver. The coverage was great — it was what the conservatives said and did that was appalling.

It was bad enough that former Colorado Senate President John Andrews invited this bigot to speak, but even worse were the remarks by current state Senator Kevin Grantham, R-Cañon City, that we consider banning construction of new mosques, “because…mosques are not churches.”

To educate Kevin, mosques are indeed Islamic “churches,” as synagogues are Jewish “churches.” Some mosques contain community rooms, sports facilities, day cares, etc… just like the Christian mega-churches in my neighborhood.

Kevin, you may have heard about an obscure document called the U.S. Constitution and its first Amendment, which prohibits Congress from passing laws promoting the establishment of religion or prohibiting the free expression thereof. This amendment does not distinguish between religions or between theism generally and atheism. Your paranoid anti-constitutional idea to give preference to one religion (Christianity) over another (Islam), to even consider prohibiting construction of mosques, is completely hostile to our founding ideals of freedom to which you no doubt give lip service while waving the flag.

This is America, not medieval Europe in the Dark Ages. The Crusades ended centuries ago. We live in a democracy, not a theocracy. Surely you heard? It was in all the papers!

I pray your constituents realize what a mistake they made in electing you to an office for which you are clearly unfit, and correct their error this November.
