Eric Grossman should resign from Health Benefit Exchange Board

Dear Editor,

As an organization representing more than 500,000 Coloradans, the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative calls on Eric Grossman to resign from the newly formed Health Benefit Exchange Board. As a health industry insider, his appointment tips the scales away from a board concerned with meeting the health care cost, coverage and quality needs of small businesses, individuals and families and toward the interests of insurers.

Even though Grossman was appointed to the board as a non-health insurance industry appointment, as a vice president of TriZetto — a health care technology solutions provider — he has extensive ties with the health insurance industry. Many of TriZetto’s clients will directly benefit from the development of the exchange and insurance industry representatives sitting on TriZetto’s board. This, combined with Grossman’s published statements about the potential profitability of the health benefits exchange, raises serious concerns for Colorado’s consumers.

If decisions about this new competitive marketplace are disproportionately influenced by the insurance industry, Colorado will not have the reliable information, strict oversight and high standards needed to create affordable choices in the exchange.

CCHI urges all of the appointees to the board to develop a competitive insurance marketplace that meets the needs of the small businesses, individuals and families that will be purchasing coverage through the exchange.
