Denver Dems showcase Colorado wines

Democrats in Denver’s House District 6 got an early start on the holiday celebrating last month when they convened at the Congress Park home of state Rep. Lois Court and Patrick Reynolds for a fundraiser and jump start for the next election cycle.
The local Dems had such a successful GOTV effort for the 2010 election that they ended up depleting their party funds. So the forward-looking partisans decided to start preparing for the next set of elections with a wine sampling. (Printing, door hangers, phones, etc. all cost money…)
The $25 per person event featured Colorado wines supplied by Argonaut Wine and Liquors — where Colorado politicos shop for wine and spirits — and all were available for order at Court’s lovely and festive home. The four featured wines that evening included Laughing Cat from Carlson Vineyards, a well-balanced, semi-sweet white wine produced from 100 percent Colorado-grown Gewurztraminer grapes in the Grand Valley. The heady, captivating aroma notes were lime candy, spice and rose. The taste was tropical fruit, honey, and Asian spices.
Also available for sampling was a 2008 Sweet Baby Red produced by Plum Creek Winery, and a 2008 Stoney Mesa Pinot Gris, made in the small town of Cedaredge and consisting of citrus aromas with hints of green apple and lemon. In order to preserve the fruit flavors of the grapes, they were pressed immediately at the winery using a membrane press and then cooled to clarify the juice. After racking the juice, the fermentation was slow and cool to preserve the aroma. It was then allowed to set for four months before filtration and bottling.
See how much we learned in the short time span of an hour!
Of course there was also music, political chatter and greeting of old and new friends. And good eats!
The most precious of attendees was Andrew Romanoff’s dog Zorro, who bunks at Court’s house when his master is out of town or on extended trips. The state Rep. takes such good care of him that we doubt he’s ever going to leave!
