Rep. Polis: Be careful what you pray for…

A couple weeks ago, I stood up for the public option, and was blown away by the public support.
Your calls and activism have led to our House effort being successfully picked up by the Senate. Today there are 37 Senators that have indicated their support of inclusion of the public option! In partnership with my colleagues in the Senate I will continue to push for the inclusion of the public option.
Today I want to share with you a prayer that a national prayer Web site recently asked its viewers to give in my honor:
Schoolchildren Bullied by Homosexual Bill
Let Us Pray. Almighty God, we pray You help defeat the homosexual child-recruiting act in Congress called the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA), introduced in the House by Democratic Congressman Jared Polis. This new legislation targets children in the public schools for pro-homosexual indoctrination and anti-Christian bullying by adults. Lord, we pray You help Christian lawyers protect our children, from Proverbs 8:11, give them wisdom, prudence, knowledge and discretion in order to defend our children. We also pray for the removal of any person who wants to harm or recruit our children for sexual perversion, in Jesus Name, Amen.
I now ask that you show that you respond to the power of prayer by tithing $5/month or $10/month to my campaign.
Needless to say, I am not sponsoring any law that meets the deceptive description above, although I am proudly sponsoring the Student Non-discrimination act which would prevent bullying and harassment against students who are gay, lesbian, or transgendered.
On February 12, 2008 fifteen year-old Larry King was gunned down in the computer lab of his school in Oxnard, California simply because he was gay. He died two days later. Unfortunately, Larry is not alone. Each year, thousands of gay and lesbian students, as well as straight students who are perceived to be gay and lesbian, live in constant fear across the country. Nearly ninety percent of gay students report being verbally harassed at school because of their sexual orientation. And a quarter of LGBT students reported being physically assaulted at school. Yet, many schools fail to respond. Nearly a third of the students who did report this harassment said their school staff did nothing in response.
My Republican opponent has attacked me and said that I am trying to “create special protections and privileges for some at the expense of other.” Shouldn’t all students be able to attend school safely, without having to fear for their lives? We already have federal protections in place to protect students from race-based and gender-based discrimination — it’s time to also protect students from discrimination based on what gender of person they are attracted to. Schools should be safe places for all children to learn, and I need your help to respond to this prayer and Republican attacks by pledging $5, $10, or $20 per month to help me get my message out.
Help me show them the power of prayer. Please ask your friends to join you in responding to this prayer by supporting my message of tolerance and respect, and please tithe in response to this prayer so that I continue to fight for the public option and safe schools.
May those who pray for me see peace, love, and joy in their lives.
