Udall, Bennet do us proud

We are truly entering a historic time for our country. For over 60 years, we have discussed health care reform with little to show for the effort… until now. We are nearing the finish line and are close to having a bill that will offer health care coverage to nearly 30 million Americans, including several hundred thousand right here in Colorado. Now, most people, including President Obama and Sen. Michael Bennet, agree that this legislation is a work in progress. Once it’s enacted, we, as Americans, will need to work with our president, senators and House members to begin the process of defining what the health care system is going to look like for our children and grandchildren. So, now more than ever, we need to have folks engaged.
Above all, we need to work together, not against each other. For that reason, I was really proud of our freshman senator, Michael Bennet, when he spoke up and took a stand against those legislators who were holding up passage of this needed legislation while they squeezed a few more nickels out of the American people. The people of Nebraska and Louisiana should be embarrassed by the spectacle that Senators Nelson and Landrieu made of themselves during this time. Taking a principled stand on personal beliefs, however misguided, is one thing. Ignoring the needs of 30 million Americans for political gain is quite another.
In any case, I am proud of the teamwork and patriotism exhibited by both our senators. You’re both making Coloradans proud.
