Legislative Hispanics call on Trump not to revoke protection for immigrants
Hispanic groups nationwide have been pushing back hard at President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to reverse the Obama administration’s executive order shielding undocumented immigrants who arrived as children. On Thursday, reports Chalkbeat Colorado, Democratic state House Speaker Crisanta Duran and six other Hispanic members of the General Assembly wrote the incoming Trump administration, imploring it to keep the policy in place so those covered don’t face deportation.
“…(W)e urge you to continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, so that recipients can continue to pursue the American dream,” the letter states.
“When DACA was created, it allowed Dreamers to access educational and professional opportunities that would otherwise be unattainable…we ask your administration to continue to accept and adjudicate initial applications and renewals for the program unless and until Congress passes comprehensive immigration reform.”
The letter states that some 20,000 Coloradans have been granted protection under the executive order by President Obama, among 742,000 who have been spared deportation nationwide. The letter goes on to note the likely effects of rescinding the order:
Eliminating the program would have a ripple effect across several other sectors, as DACA recipients would lose their drivers? licenses, health insurance, and the ability to repay car loans and home mortgages. Eliminating DACA would increase healthcare costs, place pressure on the social safety net, and create massive disruptions to businesses. In 2010, there were 27,645 new immigrant business owners in Colorado, and new immigrant business owners had a total net business income of $1.2 billion.
The other state House and Senate members, all Democrats, who signed the letter are Senate Minority Leader Lucia Guzman, Rep. Adrienne Benavidez, Assistant House Minority Leader Leroy Garcia, Rep. Dan Pabon, Sen. Irene Aguilar, Rep. Joe Salazar, Sen. Dominick Moreno and Rep. Donald Valdez.
